FIFTY-FIVE local Jerudong International School (JIS) students displayed their skills at the 8th Brunei Young Musicians 2019 concert at the school’s Arts Centre Foyer yesterday.
Brunei Music Society chairperson and organiser Jane Koh in a press statement shared that the event showcased 28 different musical performances, comprising both classical and modern pieces, from the young musicians.
“The 55 Bruneian talents were chosen after a series of auditions held last December as part of the bi-annual Brunei Musical Society Young Musicians event,” she said.
“One of the aims of the Brunei Music Society is to promote the enjoyment, understanding, performance and study of music to young people,” Koh added.
“Last December, we received a record 97 entries from a large number of music schools from both Bandar Seri Begawan and Kuala Belait. Selections were made via ‘blind auditions’, in which the entrants were judged solely by listening to recordings of musical performances they submitted. The selected musicians were then invited for a live audition where the final selections were made by members of the Brunei Music Society Committee.”
The Brunei Music Society is a voluntary, non-profit group that has been organising classical music recitals in Brunei since 1972.
The group aims to create opportunities for the residents of Brunei to enjoy classical music of a high standard and nurture music appreciation among the country’s children and youth, achieving the latter by organising school events and workshops with the help of visiting artistes.
